Mentee: Communitopia Climate Action Small-Group Planning: Sustainability in Our Schools
Concetta is a volunteer leader with the youth-led non-profit, Sustainability in Our Schools (SIOS). She has been a mentee working with Communitopia’s Youth Educator since February 2021. As a result of participating in Communitopia’s programming, she has taken meaningful action on climate change in many ways. She writes, “I have been pushed to stay on task with my goals in terms of helping the environment. This year, I have done more cleanups than ever and changed my lifestyle to a much more eco-conscious one. I am always trying to influence others to be more eco-friendly and pushing myself to make my mark, even if it is a small one, for the environment. SIOS has allowed me to pursue one of my passions to educate others on the environment, and Communitopia has guided me through that process.” Concetta also adds, “Communitopia has made me significantly more comfortable with talking to others about climate change. I have been able to create a pitch, collaborate with others, and speak out about things I am passionate about.”
Concetta encourages other youth to participate in Communitopia’s programming because it is a space where young people can talk about how they can impact climate change. She looks forward to seeing others becoming more passionate about the environment at a much younger age and believes that Communitopia helps youth reach that goal. These days you will find Concetta starting a garden and compost bin in her yard and continuing to do community cleanups.
