“Climate change is an important issue in our world today that affects so many people, and it's something that will only get worse. The more I learn about climate change, the more I realize it's connected to other problems. I think it's important to slow and stop climate change for a better future.”

Katie has been taking action with Communitopia for nearly three years and is one of their most active youth participants. Katie is a current member of the Woodland Hills Youth Climate Action Team, a former member of the Get Out The Vote Leadership Team, and an active member of Pittsburgh Youth for Climate Action (PYCA).

In the summer and fall of 2020, she also served as a lead youth summiteer for the first-ever youth-led Woodland Hills Youth Virtual Climate Action Summit (WHYCAS). The first summit of its kind in the region, WHYCAS attracted nearly 200 attendees and raised over $1,500 for climate projects.

She joined the GOTV leadership team to learn about how to educate voters on PA voting procedures, seek out climate-friendly candidates on the ballot, and attend monthly PYCA meetings. She writes, “Communitopia has organized lots of opportunities for me to take climate action with people my age, like PYCA. It helps to connect me with programs and enables me to organize actions with other passionate students.” Among the many leadership skills Katie has developed over these past three years, she specifically notes that Communitpia helped her “learn a lot of event planning and organizational skills when I worked on organizing the first climate summit at Woodland Hills High School.” When she’s not taking action on climate change, she is co-developing and producing the podcast, Bridges and Books, which she encourages you to check out at bridgesandbooks.com!
