A Love Poem For Our Planet: “Earthrise”

Written by Communitopia Board Member, Erin Bell

We love the funny Valentine’s Day tropes and traditions: silly love poems and Hallmark cards, last-minute flowers and heart-shaped candy, sparkly jewelry and strong cologne, cheap takeout and Netflix.

Ultimately, though, Valentine’s Day is about spreading love. And despite the cheesy rituals, we can definitely get behind that idea.

This year, we want to show love not only to the people in our lives but also to our planet--to our home and haven. To our Mother Earth. Let’s always remember to love her and respect her.

In the spirit of Valentine’s Day, we share with you a poem written and presented by the U.S. Youth Poet Laureate, the brilliant Amanda Gorman, who recently gained notoriety after her stunning performance at President Joe Biden’s inauguration.

The poem, entitled “Earthrise”, offers a powerful and inspiring perspective on climate change.
